Step One

Open Up The Bottom Sash

Summary

Is your window stuck? Can you at least open it? If you can’t, the first thing you need to do is get your bottom sash open. To get it unstuck, you'll need to cut the paint.  See the video below to learn how.

Get the Bottom Sash to Open Up. The first step is to make sure the bottom part of the window, called the “sash,” is able to open and close. They are often stuck because they have been painted shut over the years.  Here, I show you how to open this type of stuck sash, using a Window Opener Tool that you can buy at most specialty hardware stores through my links on the TOOLS  The only stuck window I could find as a quick example was at my Mom’s house, so I filmed this video there.

Sometimes you have to cut the paint from the outside too.  Had to do that for a few windows on my professor’s house.  Painters have no problem painting these old windows shut.

Are you done? In the next step we will begin replacing the sash ropes.  So now move on to Step Two: Remove an Inner Rail!
