In several of our blog posts, we have collaborated with Melanie of Glaze Craft Windows to help explain various restoration techniques related to historic windows.  Well – an exciting fact about Melanie – is tnot only she a hands-on preservation expert, she is also the director of Goucher College’s Master of Arts in Historic Preservation!  She is also a professor for the program.  In this video, she sits down with us to discuss her program and the university.

About Goucher and the Master of Arts in Historic Preservation Program:

Historic preservation is more than a trade—it’s a commitment to protecting the cultural and architectural heritage that defines our communities. For those already working in the trades or restoration field, leveling up your career often means gaining a deeper knowledge of preservation theory, law, and advocacy. That’s where Goucher College’s Master of Arts in Historic Preservation (M.A.H.P.) stands out.

This nationally respected, low-residency program is designed for working professionals and hands-on craftspeople. With an emphasis on real-world application, students gain expertise in preservation planning, community engagement, building conservation, and preservation law—without stepping away from their career. Whether you’re a window restorer, heritage contractor, or architect, this degree strengthens your ability to take on complex projects, lead policy discussions, and advocate for our built history.

Why It Matters for Tradespeople and Craftspeople

At Low Budget Window Restoration, we understand that many of our readers and clients are deeply involved in restoring historic windows, plaster, masonry, and millwork. What makes the Goucher M.A.H.P. program unique is its support for those in the trades who want to expand their preservation credentials while still working on-site. The hybrid format includes online coursework with brief residencies, making it manageable for even the busiest contractor or small business owner.

Graduates have gone on to work in national parks, preservation nonprofits, and cultural resource management. It’s an excellent opportunity to gain academic depth while staying grounded in the physical work of saving historic buildings.
