In this video, I collaborate with Melanie of Glaze Craft Windows in Virginia to demonstrate how to sand paint on the inner profiles of a historic window sash. The sanding process occurs after one has removed a majority of the old paint by either scraping, using an infrared heater, etc. Sanding is what adds that extra touch that will help you achieve a beautiful, final finish.
Interior window profiles are the unique shapes or contours along the inside edge of your window frame or sash. These details, whether simple or ornate, are what give historic windows their character and charm, making them worth preserving during restoration.
In my Online Window Restoration Guide, I often advise leaving the profiles as-is, if the paint is intact and in good condition. However, when necessary, one can strip the paint and then sand the finish smooth before repainting. Due the delicate nature of an interior profile, an infrared heater is the best tool for stripping the paint before sanding. An infrared heater gently softens old paint, making it easier to remove without damaging the delicate details of the profile. This method ensures that the original craftsmanship is preserved while preparing the surface for a fresh finish.
After the old paint is stripped away, use the techniques taught in this video to sand the profiles. Sanding the profiles is that extra step that will give you the beautiful finish later.
